Depends on what part the Country you are in and also what mood the person is in, By rights the van must fail the MOT as it is not fully road worthy.

Have you got a link to that and their definition of road worthy?

I've had a vehicle pass with a defective none testable light. Would that in your opinion make it unroadworthy? There are thousands of cars running about that never had that light fitted.

    Yeah, gaiter is a fail.

Don't buy one of those split gaiters or "sticky boots" - you'll fit it one day, and be changing it the next.

    Balljoint NOT CV joint!

As I had no clue where the OP was and in Northern Ireland being a Government run MOT centre they chose not to pass mine before with lights out and I had to replace them prior to it being passed.

Why you silly comment was posted is beyond me to. !!!!!

Oh, yes, sorry. I forgot NI. Regardless, the MOT test there is to the same criteria and reversing lights are not tested, so my comment was still valid - and I still don't know why you think they'd fail.

It would take literally two minutes for you to Google it, and then you could have saved your time writing a post which didn't actually answer any part of the OP's question accurately.

A ball joint rubber can be split and still pass the mot, it has to be excessively split and no longer able to prevent ingress before it becomes a fail.

This does give quite a lot of leeway, but to be honest for a 6 quid joint and good vehicle maintenance, I wouldn't hesitate in replacing it.

Well it failed on two tyres and number plate light !!!

Luckily i knew the tester !!!

So went straight to motor factors to get a lamp. checked the no. plates and they were working ???

It was the rear nearside side light that was out, new lamp and sorted.

Straight back, 2 minute retest and all done.

Had an advisory on play in the steering column but i can't feel anything ?

    Cheers Guys...

So you were driving around on two illegal tyres...?

Phone and thank the tester for spotting them before Mr Plod did, saving you from points and a fine - and make a mental note to keep an eye on them yourself in future.

To be fair, that does slightly depend on what the tyres failed for. Granted it was probably tread wear but it could have been a number of things you wouldn't necessarily spot on a weekly check, and would be unlikely to be picked up by plod either unless they started jacking the car and crawling under:

Small cuts or bulges, especially on the inner sidewall of a rear tyre
Cracking exposing the plies between tread blocks (can be hard to see until really bad)
Asymmetrical tyre fitted with "outside" marking inside
Directional tyre fitted the wrong way
