ATOL protection vs credit card?

If i purchase the hotel and flights separate it will be cheaper for me.

If i purchase the hotel and/or flights on credit card from what i understand it gives me as good as protection as ATOL does? So i do not need to worry about ATOL?

Hotel will be through Expedia but looking into it this Martin states "You're unlikely to be covered when payments are made to a company that isn't the one providing you with the product or service". So i guess that would not be covered with a credit card? http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases

Just wanting to double check before doing it

Thanks for your help :)

ATOL would be good at getting you out of a foreign land if a tour company goes under while you're overseas.

Section 75 is a drawn out process, reliant on interpretation of local consumer laws, that should pay for consequential losses.

And you'll have travel insurance too.

If you book via an agent as opposed to direct with the airline, hotel etc Section 75 doesn't apply. As you're travelling independently you should have the correct cover, part of which should be supplier failure.

Is it just the hotel you're booking via Expedia? If so how likely is the hotel or hotel group to cease trading between when you book and when you travel?

I have supplier failure on travel insurance but a successful claim is likely to be "ATOL" protected i have been told by an agent which kind of defeats the purpose of the insurance. But saying this they said every case is assessed on a individual basis. .

I was planning on booking only hotel..

But i have free cancellation so i could cancel. and rebook with Expedia again for flights + hotel at the same time with credit card. Would this be best? Would cost around an extra £30 to do it this way. Is it still best to use a credit card with this type of thing for the slim chance i might be covered for something under section 75?

    Thanks!

I don't understand that statement. How can a hotel only booking be "ATOL" protected. That's one reason we take out supplier failure cover. You need to read your policy wording.

if it is a hotel only booking with Expedia, there is no ATOL protection, ever. There has to be a flight involved in the sale, ATOL stands for Air Travel Organisers Licence!
