Yea but you must also bear in mind that OP is probably working full time, so it may be difficult to re-arrange delivery. Can't see how you can criticise anyone in hindsight for leaving a parcel in a safe place through a gate.

Well firstly you are assuming that you know what their pay structure is.

That aside, as long as the item is stored somewhere safe then who cares? Customer is happy because they don't have to book time off work etc and driver is happy because they are getting paid to do an honest days work.

So you are saying that the driver deliberately caused the damaged? Wow that's a heavy accusation.

It was quite clearly unintentional. The driver didn't go out that day thinking "I'm going to break this guy's alarm system/gate", it just happened through trying to store a parcel safely! Can't see how you can reasonably compare that to con artists, shoplifters and cowboys etc.

That being said, driver is responsible and should sort it out.

Was I speaking a foreign language?

I didn't assume anything about the pay structure - what I said was that you'd likely find he didn't want to come back and that would be especially true if he was paid per parcel rather than per hour.

Nor did I say the damage to the gates was deliberate, I said his actions were. His actions of forcing a parcel through a gate rather than obtaining a signature and handing it over to someone in the house - a gate is not the same as a door, how many gates do you know of that lead indoors to a safe and secure place that would ensure no opportunists could steal the item and that the parcel wouldn't be damaged?

Would you leave valuables in your garden even if it was enclosed with gated access? I know I don't.

And technically the cowboy comparison wasn't an extreme as this guy is a cowboy courier rather than a professional - carrying out his duties with reasonable skill and care.

just so we are clear, these gates are basically a garage door, they make a full seal all the way round top and bottom to the house to an enclosed space. the difference is that they open in the middle unlike an up and over garage door.

the equivalent would be pulling up a locked garage door just enough at the corner to allow something about the size of a large brick to fit through - that would cause damage.

i am in no doubt that the driver was just trying to do his job and get the parcel to me hence why i haven't just said i want some money without thinking about it first, but after checking normally that it was locked and taking a few steps away my cctv shows him walking back and then leaning against it to make the parcel fit through.

If people know they are not likely to be in and the item isn't too large or heavy then why not get it delivered to your place of work (assuming it is allowed and you are present to sign for it). Every day my office gets about 30 parcels delivered.

Well then why would an employee paid by the hour not want to go back to an address? You are either assuming they are of a particular mindset towards the extra work it creates, or that they are paid per parcel.

I'm going to be quite ignorant and bow out without reading your post, because this bickering is pointless.

you've obviously never ordered from amazon who many times delivery after a normal work place shuts.
