annual travel insurance - which start date is best?

Options
Previously I used to buy travel insurance starting on the day of travel. I always buy it separately, not with the airline. Thinking about it the arrangement might not be so wise as circumstances can arise before the flight date. How do others do it, what date is best? Weeks before or starting on the date of travel?

If you want to be covered for cancellation from the moment you have paid your deposit, you need to buy as soon as you book.
