Strange landline problem

Hello

Few weeks ago brother moved house & had to change his landline number.

When I ring this number on my landline I get an automated message saying the number is out of service. However, when I ring on my mobile it connects. He has rung my landline from his number & that’s ok & his number comes up on 1471 yet when I press option 3 to call back I get the out of service message again. He says he has had no problems with anyone else ringing his number on a landline.

I am definitely ringing the number correctly it just seems for some reason my landline will not make outgoing calls to his number. I have no problem ringing any other landline numbers.

Anyone any ideas on this problem before I contact Sky. Thanks

Does he have anonymous caller reject and your call is therefore being rejected?

Try calling again dialling 1470 before his number.

He says he doesn't have that also i tried ringing again last night & as you advised i put 1470 in first & the same thing happened again a message saying the number was out of order.

    Thanks

Maybe it's your landline phone that is the problem, presumably you can make phone calls to other landlines without issue - just to eliminate the possibility.

I am having the same problem with my extension phone as well. The problem only effects the one number. I have had no problem ringing other landline numbers.

Try using 1471 instead of 1470.

Who is your brother's telephone provider? It sounds like a problem with the number porting/routing database - Sky doesn't recognise it as a valid number and is not forwarding the call or is forwarding it to the wrong operator who is rejecting it.

I've had exactly this problem twice with my Virgin Media service (though the numbers I was trying to reach were both BT). On one occasion the unobtainable number was a neighbour just 3 doors away. On both occasions it took repeated calls to VM to remedy the problem which was apparently caused by 'network issues'. The ball is definitely in the service provider's court. I don't know what Sky support is like but my experience suggests that an offshore call centre is not going to be much help - the issue is sufficiently obscure to defeat their scripts.

The trouble i am going to have is that my phone & broadband are with two different suppliers. I used to be with one supplier (Pipex remember them) but the service went so bad i tried to move but it was a nightmare & took 12 months & Ofcom intervining to sort it. From then on decided best to keep the two services seperate & have done this for several years now.

It's a phone problem so you deal with your phone provider.
