Is it worth another go ?

Hi.
I have tried to claim back PPI from Barclays on a loan that we finished paying off in the early nineties. The only proof I have that this loan existed is a letter from Barclays that had a cheque attached saying that we had paid to much back and that sum was refunded. The letter does not have a account number but does have a sort code on it. It also has the name of the member of staff and signature of the person that dealt with this in the loans department and the official Barclays letterhead. Barclays rejected my claim stating that they had no proof of this loan even though I sent them a copy of the letter. Can anybody please advise if this is worth pursuing any further or should I just forget it. This is my first post on this superb forum and would really appreciate some advice.

Did you bank with Barclays, have a current account with them? If so, is it still open or when was it closed?

If there is no evidence left with regards to loan payments or amounts etc, your complaint is over.

Did you send a SAR? Although, even a SAR can only give you what info is left, not magic decades old paperwork into existence.

  • No we did not bank with Barclays. We had two loans with them. One was in the late 80s which we have no paperwork and know that we would have no chance of a claim. We only have the letter described regarding the loan that was over five years and was repaid in1993.

Without an account number, this was always doomed to failure as there will be no records kept after so long for a non-Barclays customer.

Even with an account number, what evidence would you have that you actually paid PPI?

I think you are clutching at straws, I'm afraid.

It sounds like the claim is over, without an account number and the age of the possible evidence makes it highly unlikely that it can be traced
  • Thanks for your advice it has helped to confirm what I suspected would be the case.
