Credit Card balance below zero when billed

I have a Halifax Clarity CC and I hired a car last week

The hire company took the hire fee plus £200 then refunded me £200 when I returned the car. The problem is that my billing period end occurred during the hire so my balance for May is currently -£190 (following a small spend)

What happens if my balance is still negative when I get to the end of the billing period for May? What happens with the direct debit (which is set to pay the full amount off when it is due). Am I better off getting my balance to a positive number to avoid problems

It just means no payment will be taken.

Different cards have different rules. Some will take the full statement amount, regardless of any refunds paid between the statement and the DD. Others will count the refund as a payment and take the statement amount less the refund.

You need to work out what your card does. I hired cars from Enterprise regularly at one point and always had the refund quite quickly. Hopefully yours will be through before your statement.

You should have an exact date but they often end on the statement date so need paying before then to avoid interest so in your case to be paid before the June statement is produced but not necessarily with the May payment.

You don't need to spend extra on your credit card.

All that will happen is that until you owe money, no payment will be taken.
