Thank you for this warning, Lindelou.

Just in case anyone does not know, there is a feature called Last Call Barring which enables you to block any unwanted caller from calling your landline again from the same number. Depending on your provider, it is either free or £2 - £3 per month. Of course, you have to listen to the first call to find out you don't want to know but, if you can see the number calling you on your handset and you don't recognise it, you can ignore the call then see if they left a voicemail. If they did not, chances are it was a sales call so you can go ahead and bar it without speaking to them. I always do this with non-geographic numbers (03, 08, 09) as they are often from cold callers. Legit people tend to use land line numbers and/or leave voice mails. HTH.

A cold call offering to sell you a box that blocks cold calls... Oh, the irony!

Seriously, that scenario should set off alarm bells.

Most caller display numbers mean absolutely nothing. The cold callers seem to just generate random numbers. Block one and you'll get the same call from a different number. Easiest to just ignore unknown numbers and see if they leave any worthwhile message. Most these days seen to be PPI re-incarnated and continuing Green Deal. I don't think the "you've got a virus" ones leave messages,
