Windows Live Mail 2012?

I've received an email, informing me:-
When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able to receive email sent to your Out!look!.!com account in Windows Live Mail 2012.

A couple of questions, if I may?

1. What do I need to do, to continue receiving Outlook.com mail?

2. Will I continue to receive mail from other ISPs (eg. Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail), via Windows Live Mail 2012?

In answer to question 2, you should be fine with Yahoo and GMail, but not hotmail. It's Outlook.com's servers which are changing, not Live Mail 2012 , and of course hotmail is on the same systems so would be equally affected sooner or later.

For question 1, it's not clear to me whether alternative email clients (Thunderbird etc.) which use IMAP and POP will still work with outlook.com. WLM will use IMAP and POP for email (but I think not Calendar/Contacts) so if Outlook.com won't work with that, then would it affect other email clients too? (Unless they use Exchange ActiveSync/)

There is also this theory, which suggests WLM could be made to keep working for email, but won't sync Calendar or Contacts any more.
Maybe this is to do with calendar/contacts etc sync'ing - wild guessing here I confess....
So maybe that imap and pop will still work on live mail in respect of emails alone but the calendar sync part will no longer work.
It appears live mail 2012 uses Exchange Active Sync as the protocol.
  • OK thanks.

So, is there an upgrade to WLM 2012, that I could install, which would would allow me to continue to receive Outlook.com emails?

Also, will I continue to receive Outlook.com emails, through the email program on my Hudl 2?

As far as I can tell, they did try to produce a patch to fix the problem, a few months ago, but it caused WLM to crash left, right and centre, so they withdrew it. My reading is that they won't try again to patch WLM.

However there remains the possibility that you might be able to reconfigure WLM to use POP and IMAP, which, if it worked, would sync emails but not Calendar/Contacts. I don't know if that will work though.

    Again, I don't know. I hope so.

Even now, after I have upgraded people to W7, I get the question "where's Outlook Express gone"; most of these people are happy with Thunderbird and a couple have WLM; I don't think any use hotmail,outlook,live...

I dislike alot the 8.1/10 Mail app. The sooner I can get (home) customers onto web-based email the better.
  • Something to note
One of my hotmail.co.uk addresses was migrated to the new platform today.
(the other remains as it was)

I had to re-activate the pop3 settings for the migrated account.
It appears the default on the new platform is for pop3 to be disabled
All you need to do is log into the Webmail interface, go to options and scroll down to where it says pop/imap.
    Then, on the next screen
There you will find Pop3 switched off
Switch it back on with the 'radio buttons' and check the other options are as you want them for pop3.
Save the settings at bottom of screen and Log out.
(the pop3 settings details listings will still "appear" to be blank even after saved until you log off - and log back in again if you want to check them)
Then you will find POP3 back working.
I did not need to change the pop3 setting in my email client (which is outlook 2003) at all.

    Hope this helps
