Wrong Tax Code - Obtaining a Refund
Comments
-
I'm returning to my thread because I am trying to submit my self assessment for 15/16 using information from my P45 from Sainsburys and my first payslip (tax month 12) from the NHS (with the 0T CUMUL tax code). I didn't earn anything in the 15/16 from self employment so have put £0 or left blank for all self employment sections yet it says under Class 2 National Insurance this:
If your profits are £5965 or more you must pay Class 2 NICs. For 2015 to 2016, Class 2 NICs are £2.80 a week.
Your self-employment record shows you owe:
Class 2 NIC amount:
£ 145.60
If I have made £0 profit and have no expenses for self employment, why do I owe £145.60? It says if my profits are £5965 or more which they aren't.

because unless you hold an exemption, class 2 is payable
much more to the point if you had no self employed income then do not put zero on the self employed page, just do not tick the box (tailor my tax return section) for self employment at all then the whole thing goes away since if you had no SE income you cannot complete the SE page and you cannot be asked to pay class 2. Simples
I thought the exemption didn't apply from 2015/16 onwards and SA would pick it up purely from profits?0 -
I've deleted the self employment section and the class 2 section has also gone (it appears). Thanks. I have one more question, on the tax month 12 payslip (first slip from the NHS) it shows three things under deductions:
PAYE: £224.20
NI£51.27
NHS Pension 5%: £59.01
In my income for NHS section of my self assessment, I found a "UK tax taken off NHS pay:" I'm not sure what to enter here. Do I just input the PAYE value of £224.20 and then that will be amount I get refunded to me?0 -
So "dazed" is saying, just don't tell them...0
-
@sj1990 I already hear the message from dazed, but what does his message have to do with what I am asking for help with in my latest reply above?0
-
Yes, you should only enter the PAYE Tax figure there and not the National Insurance deduction or pension contribution.
Whether you will get a refund of £224.20 will depend on what else you have put on your return. Once you have filled in everything you need there should be an option to view the tax calculation before you submit the return to the HMRC.
Don't forger to complete the section specifying what you want to happen to any overpaid tax. I think you can add your bank details so any refund due is sent to your bank account0
