What will happen if I leave my 0 hr job n sign on. Universal credit1s I hear u get Sanctioned for 6 months? I don't know I read . What is the current rule on zero hours contracts?

Universal Credit is designed to be responsive to fluctuations in earnings. In weeks
where a claimant has lower or no income from their zero hours contract job, Universal
Credit payments will automatically increase at the next payment date. The flexibility of
these types of contracts is attractive to some individuals, but people on Universal Credit
are not required to accept zero hours contracts which require exclusivity.

    It's zero hours...you aren't expected to work any hours at all in a zero hour job. If you aren't getting more than enough hours each week you can turn down any work offered. Eventually your employer will stop offering you work and you will effectively no longer be working for the company. You don't have to hand in any written notice to leave you just keep declining the offers of work. You cannot get sanctioned for refusing to work more than your contracted hours. Your contracted hours are zero.

    Jobseekers face losing their benefits for three months or more if they refuse to take zero-hours contract roles, a letter from a Conservative minister has revealed.

    For the first time, benefit claimants are at risk of sanctions if they do not apply for and accept certain zero-hours jobs under the new universal credit system, despite fears that such contracts are increasingly tying workers into insecure and low paid employment.

    Last week, the Office for National Statistics revealed the number of contracts that do not guarantee minimum hours of work or pay but require workers to be on standby had reached 1.4 million.

    More than one in 10 employers are using such contracts, which are most likely to be offered to women, young people and people over 65. The figure rises to almost half of all employers in the tourism, catering and food sector.

    Currently, people claiming jobseekers' allowance are not required to apply for zero-hours contract vacancies and they do not face penalties for turning them down.

    However, the change in policy under universal credit was revealed in a letter from Esther McVey, an employment minister, to Labour MP Sheila Gilmore, who had raised the issue of sanctions with her.

    The senior Tory confirmed that, under the new system, JobCentre "coaches" would be able to "mandate to zero-hours contracts", although they would have discretion about considering whether a role was suitable.

    Separately, a response to a freedom of information request to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published on its website reveals: "We expect claimants to do all they reasonably can to look for and move into paid work. If a claimant turns down a particular vacancy (including zero-hours contract jobs) a sanction may be applied, but we will look into the circumstances of the case and consider whether they had a good reason."

    If it's not worth taking the work then you have a valid reason to turn down the offer of work.

    How much does it cost to get to/from work using the bus? If a bus is not available at the times they want you to work or the work site is too far from a bus stop how much is the taxi fare? You are not required to get a free lift from anyone nor are you required to walk long distances.

    How many hours are they offering you?

    No ill just say I'm doing 0 hr contract I don't have to accept from company is this right? I'm right.
    Hope im right. . What does required to accept zero hours contracts which require exclusivity mean I got my dumb boots on tday.

    Are you actually in a zero hours contract at the moment? or are you thinking about accepting one?

    Do you have housing costs?

    My understanding is that you can apply for Universal Credit if your earnings are under a certain amount and you have housing costs.

    The the UC can be adjusted according to the fluctuations in pay.

    Can you confirm that you are already in a zero hours contract or not? If you are what have your average earnings been and hours? And please answer teh question about housing costs.

    So don't leave...you can still turn the work down and you will effectively have no income and get full payment of UC. They will eventually stop calling you offering you work.

    I just turned down the offer of work today. I will not get sanctioned for it. Doing the work tomorrow was not worth my time and effort.

    I have about 10 active zero hours contracts with many different clients. I can choose to do the work if I want and I can choose to turn the work down.

    Handing in your notice and resigning is different there's no need to do that with a zero hours contract. You have the right to turn all work down and not be in breach of contract.

    Yes I figured it out. But my company is quite persistive. Thnx tho for the 2nd opinion! Zero hrs is harder full time. Pays less. Did u tell ur advisor u didn't accept? I would not sucks 1.

    n legislation and whilst meeting the terms of relevant legislation1
    by
    providing a written statement of the terms and conditions of employment, contains
    provisions which create an "on call" arrangement between employer and employee.
    It does not oblige the employer to provide work for the employee. The employee
    agrees to be available for work as and when required, so that no particular number
    of hours or times of work are specified. The employee is expected to be on call and
    receives compensation only for hours worked

    A UC claimant can still be mandated to apply for and take up a zero hours contract
    and could still be sanctioned if without a good reason they
    1. refuse or fail to apply for or accept if offered a zero hours contract
    2. leave a zero hours contract voluntarily or
    are dismissed from a zero hours contract due to misconduct.

    Be assertive.

    Tell them you're doing something else elsewhere and can't make that date. You do not have to have an exclusive zero hours contract. You can work for many clients. You could be doing almost anything else at all. Doing the gardening that day sorry. Oh I've got a hair appointment booked at that time and cancelling it would incur a charge sorry. My dentist appointment is at that time sorry can't make it. Your schedule is however you make it. If you booked things before they call they can't have that time and you've got your valid reason to turn the work down.

    Don't answer the calls, if you see them in passing on a future date and they ask say you were too busy at the time and couldn't answer the call, turn your phone off, change your number. If they can't get you on the first or second call they'll try the next person on the list. They'll eventually give up calling you.

    There's no need to tell anyone you've turned work down.
