Artificial turf

Hey guys,

I always wanted a garden and now that I got one, I can't be bothered to keep it tidy. Main reason is that I suffer from a bad back and even just using a lawnmower aggravates it. I was thinking of getting artificial turf and just wanted to know the pros and cons and whether, from a aesthetic point of view, can it replace real grass?

There's many a premiership rugby club think it can, Luton Town and QPR Laos tried it.

Pro, can look like grass and you don't need to cut it. Won't go yellow in summer.

Cons, decent stuff can be expensive.

I've had it for a couple of years now and really appreciate not having to cut the lawn as it was getting too much for me. You still have to pull out the occasional weed.

But if you can't fit it yourself then it is very expensive - two or three times what I expected it to cost.

Get someone in to cut it for you and keep it tidy.

    It is so worth it.

Artificial grass only lasts for so long though.

I saw a car parked up today made of it. So then I just read their website. Seems "top end", so I'd expect it to be "HOW MUCH????"

    ^^this seems sensible.

you'll be able to pay someone to come in regularly for years for the cost of decent artificial.

Artificial grass is vile, in my humble opinion.

Everyone that says the good stuff looks real. Rubbish. You can tell a mile off that you've covered your garden in plastic. Urgh.

If you want to get rid of the grass then a nicely paved area or pea gravel with pots would look better.

Or else, rather than spend all that money on plastic "grass", buy a lawn robot... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Flymo-Lithium-ion-Robotic-Lawnmower-1200/dp/B00C70LUQ4/ They work very well, especially on simple flat lawns.

I second the view above. Artificial grass is awful even the good quality stuff. Its a fad which people will be ripping out in a few years time. Much better to go with a mixture of gravel, paving and pots to create a low maintenance garden.

    ^yep

I can understand a small area for kids to play footy on, but doing your whole garden is grim.

As has been said it is very expensive to have laid and there is a vast range of quality.

I few years ago, at a dog show, I looked at samples of a particular company's stock and only the two most (very) expensive ones looked realistic.

At a holiday park, yesterday, I wondered if some grass was real as it looked too well (evenly)cut for where it was and on touching found it to be fake. However, being heavy duty, it will be one of the very expensive ones.

Agree a small lawn for kids I can see the advantages, but for anyone else just don't do it! Certainly not if you have any interest whatsoever in having a nice garden.
