ATOL protection Expedia , booked hotel and flights separate do i sill get protection?

Hello everyone,

Will be going abroad for the first ever time and putting together a DIY package through Expedia.

I purchased a hotel a few days ago which has free cancellation.

And am going to purchase the flights for the same dates as the hotel in a few weeks. Will i still get the ATOL protection or does the purchase need to be made at the same time?

Thank you for your help.

You have to book the flights and hotel together, which ATOL define as by the end of the next day, so it sounds like you're out of luck.

dj1471 is correct, to get Flight-plus ATOL cover you would have to book the flight and accommodation within a day of each other.

Bear in mind that ATOL protection exists to cover financial failure, so only comes into play if one or more of Expedia, the airline or the accommodation supplier (including any intermediaries between Expedia and the hotel), goes bust.

If you book flight and car hire together that would give you Atol protection.

Thank you I thought it had to be in a day as well after reading the same mse article.

But I rang Expedia and they said they would issue one so I am quite confused..

I need to look into travel insurance next so maybe they will cover flights and /or accommodation going bust as well

Thanks for everyones comments I learn a lot here :-)

If Expedia said they would issue you with an ATOL certificate for your booking, then you should have ATOL cover. Here is the relevant part of their T&Cs regarding how they confirm this:
In relation to ATOL Certificates, the Customer will receive an email including a secure click-though link to their ATOL Certificate shortly after booking payment has been completed. In the unlikely event that the Customer has not received the ATOL Certificate email within 48 hours of completing their booking payment the Customer should contact Expedia on 0330 123 1235 or email travel@support.expedia.co.uk

You should of course get insurance anyway, it covers a whole other range of things.

Are you sure they will issue an Atol to cover both flights and accommodation? They should issue you one to cover your flights, but your booking doesn't qualify for a flight plus Atol as the elements haven't been booked within 24 hours of each other. Just make sure your travel insurance covers supplier failure, which it should if you get the right cover for independent travel.
