iPad Air 2 - safari tabs lost

I use my iPad extensively, and have a number of tabs open that I navigate around, or leave open to search later. I let someone use the device yesterday, and they happily browsed their way until 3am this morning, unwittingly replacing my preferred sites with their own junk. Because I don't usually share the device I didn't think to bookmark these pages.
Holding down the + is not working, it shows no recently closed tabs.
Is there any chance of getting my old tabs back? It's a bit different to the most recent browsing history, as some have been open for weeks.
