Hi,
help needed, first I'm not BG costumer but since the beginning of the year I start getting this letters from BG to my address in the name of a lady demanding payment of gas from 2007, made a call to CS and the gent. toll me that we was updated the system and no more letters. That is the problem the letters didn't stop and get harsh tone, so I used the claims online and they set me as a costumer what ! I'm with SSE. From the last letter
" If we are still not to make arrangements with you to pay what you owe, we may apply for a warrant to enter your property and fit a pay as you go meter."
Any advice on this mater will be appreciated, thanks RMonteiro.

If you receive a letter to someone who does not live at a property you should mark it 'not known at this address' and put it bback in the post marked 'return to sender'.

Call MPAS for confirmation of who your gas supplier is. Presumably BG supplied the property when you moved in and you arranged for it to be transferred to SSE? It's possible the transfer didn't go through for some reason, or that BG haven't updated their systems properly.

Let us know what the outcome of that call is and you can be given more accurate advice.

Were BG the supplier when you moved in? If you were using gas/electricity at the property before the switch to SSE went through, I suppose technically you do owe for that period but BG would not have your name and would address the bill to either the previous occupant or just to "the occupier". You are not usually legally liable for a bill unless it is in your name; possible exceptions might be it is for a business you used to own or it is in your previous name, due to marriage, for example. Spiro is right, if you get any more correspondence, mark it "not known at this address" and put it in a post box.

It might just go away if you leave the situation alone but, if you want to head off any possible unpleasantness at the pass, I suggest you do as Tripled has advised and contact the Citizens Advice or, maybe, Consumer Advice Bureau; I have always found the latter very knowledgeable and helpful and they will, if required, contact British Gas on your behalf.

The other thing you could consider, if you think it's wise and you can remain calm no matter how much they stonewall, is call BG, explain the situation and, if you get nowhere, demand politely but firmly to speak to a manager and do not be put off. Make a complaint and get a complaint reference If you still get nowhere, ask to speak to the manager's manager (escalate) and continue to do this until they listen. It is often easier to allow the CAB to do this for you. Hope this helps.

You should also check your bills and your meters both have the same meter serial numbers - could be that someone else on the estate has switched supplier and BG have somehow got the meters at someone else's address linked to yours instead.

It is fanny but the serial n. on BG letter is the same [ concern ] I'm on paperless from SSE no serial n. on my online account, to see if I'm paying some one else bill.
They are billing my address from 1st letter, 30 April 2007 to 14 Oct 2015 £5311.26 received @ 13/1/2016 payment by 22 Jan 2016, 2sd letter I have call to CS on 16/2/2016, 3tr and on 30 Apr 2007 to 9 Fev 2016 £1824.53 peh man 9 years something is wrong with this company’s it should be National Grid the only one network and supplier.

You say you have owned from new in 2005 and BG are trying to bill you from2007 onwards.

This sounds like something's been mixed up and someone else's meter has somehow been linked to yours.

Go online to your SSE account and download your latest bill. Somewhere on it it will have the meter serial number(s) which can be checked against your actual meter(s) and the BG bills, but it does look like someone else's energy has been linked to your account.

Has your meter been changed since you moved in?

My advice is to stop opening other peoples mail.

Simply cross out the address and mark the envelope "Not known at this address" or if more appropriate "No longer at this address"

Then pop it back in the nearest post box - no stamp required :)
