I didn't study enough at school / Uni
I chose the wrong original trade ( This is without a doubt)
I missed some brilliant investment opportunity
My parents are still alive
Up until now i've chosen badly with partners
.. Hell the list goes on. I'm not bitter one bit but i am intrigued as to how so many people afford such properties. Any tips welcome...
Apart from those referring to me doing the opposite of any of the above!
Interesting
I don't think Uni is the reason, many people who don't do Uni make plenty of money
Wrong trade, may be the case but most people are retrain able and now movement between trades is greater than it was.
Inheretence is a big one for some, though plenty manage without
Out of all of the reasons, your partner I believe is the big one. Not just about spending but about work ethic and risk taking.
Constantly deciding your wealth when you change partners is also key.
Where you live is another, people in the South have to take and pay big mortgages when they are young and their lifestyle reflects this, out of the Sourh east people get used to smaller accommodation costs and the find it harder to change.
Just remember a £400k house does not always bring happiness! It may but who knows.
My musings!0 -

Well i say Uni loosely. It was actually an HND in hotel and catering management, hence the wrong vocation.
Agree regarding retraining ( if you count labouring and listening/learning whilst others couldn't be bothered as such! ) that's what i did and am now working in a far better industry. Also agree with the partner thing.
Don't get me wrong i'm far from hard done by and now hold a middle management position on an income far exceeding the national average. It was just a observance that's genuinely intrigued me for a while whilst reading the boards.0 -

Unless the property you're renovating is in a truly dire state I'm sure you can manage to live there as you renovate with most of your stuff in storage. Sleep on an airbed (high end models are very comfortable nowadays) you can move between rooms easily.
Though if you have children you may go for the hotel option. Also consider a holiday let, probably a similar price to the hotel and you'll have an actual house.0 -
