Default on credit report that's been paid can it be removed?

I had a dispute with Virgin media last year - in a nutshell we were moving home but needed to check if we could take virgin with us - they took about two month to resolve this and even then it wasn't resolved they were a nightmare! Anyways after all that they then billed us for the contract termination fees of £245 - I had a lengthy complaint at this point because of all the complications we had come across and the fact that one member of staff said we probably wouldn't even be charged any fees due to being valued customers for years and it wasn't our fault that we couldn't transfer the services - the road we moved to had virgin cables but because our house was set back off the road it wasn't included.
I complained and in the meantime set up a agreement with the debt agency they had instructed to collect the money and they placed it on hold for a while until the complaint got resolved - basically I wasn't satisfied with virgins reply to my complaint it didn't exactly answer my questions so I replied to them and didn't get a reply back and was just sick of the whole saga so called the debt company up and settled it in full...
We have just been trying to get a mortgage and its come back that I have a default notice at my previous address - nothing is showing on my credit report at present but I'm certain it will be this as I can't think what else it could be.
When my credit report is updated and the default shows up if it is this does anyone know if I will be able to argue it and have it removed? I was never advised it went into default - as far as I was concerned I paid two seperate payments to the debt company whilst contesting with virgin then I paid the remaining balance off in full. Their letters/emails always said failure to keep up payments and contact with them could result in a default but I was always in touch and like I say made payment!
Hopefully someone will be able to give me some guidance? X

If it is a true default then it stays but you can ask them to remove it, the worst they will say is no.0
