Faulty rendering work - what to do?

Options
Hello all,

Back in December 2014 I had the front of my house rendered by a professional company. The cost was £3,000. This was to totally render the front of my house, and coat it with a special weatherproof coating.

Documented on the quote is this statement

'15 year independent Insurance backed guarantee that protects deposit funds, all immediate works and should they be necessary, any remedial works in the future. The purpose of the guarantee is to allay any fears clients may have about the suitability of contractors, the standard of workmanship and any materials used'

So, work went ahead, all paid for and looked good. I did question if rendering in December was a wise idea due to weather, they said it was fine as the stuff they use is the best.

Fast forward to March 2015 (3 months later) and the coating is blistering all over. Big blisters, coming off in sheets like wallpaper peeling. I contact the company to repair. Takes them until June/July time to come and fix, and this took LOTS of emails and phone calls.

The issue has since come back. I let them know around November 2015 and the owner acknowledged the email and said someone would be in touch in due course. No contact.

I have since emailed them and called to arrange a repair, but no luck.

I am going to send a letter before action to give them a kick up the backside, but my question is what should I ask for?

Can a letter before action require they fix it? I have no confidence they will fix it and the issue will be on going forever.

Would it be reasonable to get some quotes from other companies to fix it, then request this amount from the original company and state I do not want them to do the work? Is that possible given I have already allowed them to repair once and it was no good.

Any advice would be great.

My ideal solution is that they refund me the amount it will cost another outfit to repair and I wash my hands of them.

Thanks all.

How was the work paid for?
Was any of it put on a credit card or finance specifically for this job? (ie, not a personal loan).
  • Unfortunately is wasnt, it was bank transfer. I have all emails recording receipt of payments (£1000 deposit, £2000 balance), but I cant claim via credit card sadly.

Tell us more about the 'insurance backed guarantee'.

Why not contact the guarantee provider?
  • That's exactly what I was going to do... but not a whole lot I can find about it. I have a 'certificate' which was issued on completion of the job... but it just says to contact them (when I say them, I mean the company who did the job). I think its worthless, but it was a selling point. I don't suppose it will hurt to name the company here will it? Will allow you guys a better insight

Well yes, of course you are right.

If you have no contact details for the '15 year independent Insurance backed guarantee' provider, it is effectively worthless.
  • Yep I agree.

At the time I had no idea it wasn't exactly what they said; an independent insurance, I probably should have checked it but live and learn.

For information the company is http://weathershieldeurope.com and you can see they don't half lay it on thick with the warranty.

Hopefully I'm proved to be jumping the gun and they are just so busy and haven't got back to me. If I am I will happily let you all know.

I had this in the late 80's
All guaranteed, BBA certificates etc - they just closed down North Staffs Wallcoating and opened up Staffs Wallcoating

No idea who that company actually is.

They are not a limited company (which may be good news, as it may mean you have a personal claim against the 'owner' or sole trader you paid).

Their address appears to be home to a host of businesses. The street view is here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.8323853,-1.6387538,3a,43y,214.98h,88.05t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1spJnY_v65GHi5Ztpk-GnR9Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

and there's a list of businesses here:
