Internet connection problem, help needed please

My son and I both have the same HP laptops and are in the same house.

My internet connection is fine. His will not connect. It was ok yesterday afternoon before he went to work but when he came in last night the laptop will not connect to the internet. He has tried different search engines, rebooting and turning on and off the box.

He has done the 'troubleshooting' and the result comes up 'no fault found' but still no internet connection. Looking at 'connections' it shows 'Connected' at full strength.

Any suggestions as to what the problem could be please?

Connecting wirelessly or via Ethernet to the router?

Can you access the Control Panel on the router? via an 'Admin' login or similar, so you can change the router settings?

Thanks for the reply. We are on wireless connection.

Will try what you suggest but one question. If he alters the router settings I assume that will affect my connection? Sorry to sound dumb but we are both completely useless with technology!

Use Windows restore to go back to an earlier date , no files are lost

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/restore-system-files-and-settings

Probably a corrupted update or it's been turned off during an update

What version of Windows is it ? 7,8 or 10

... but he says the Network Connections dialog says 'connected'

OP, you said it was OK before he went to work - did he take the laptop with him to work, or not?

No, simply turned it off and went to work, no one else used it. Just tried to log on when he got home and found the problem. We are just trying the system restore to see if that works.
Thank you all for trying to help.
