BT credit check for uni flat?

Options
I'm due to be moving into my student flat and we need to get the BT line reactivated so that we can get broadband sorted out. When I called up to get the line reconnected I was told they were going to have to do a credit check on me to get it arranged. I told the advisor that that I didn't want to do that at this time and that I would ring them back.

I didn't want to get the credit check because my boyfriend and I bought a house last year so I think I must have had plenty of checks done then and don't want to add any more than necessary. However, I don't remember when I set up the phone line for the mortgaged house them running a credit check on me. Could it be that they ran the check but neglected to tell me or have they only done this because i've told them that it's a student flat?

Is there anyway to get this arranged without the credit check?

(By the way, i know how complicated my situation sounds! I'm a full time university student with a mortgage which is luckily small enough to be managed with a part time job! Just doesn't leave much over for extras!)
My mortgage costs me a sobering £13.06 A DAY!
That's about 5 pairs of shoes a month i'm missing out on!

I had a similar thing when I applied for a BT line for our (rented) university house.

They said "we will do a credit check for you, on this address". I went  and asked if they could do it on my home address (as I had no credit at that address, and we had constant letters from debt agencies to previous tenants about debts....), so they said yes, and then said I could have the line, with a £50 deposit.

I wouldn't worry too much about a single credit check for the BT line to be honest. You might be able to get around it by putting down a large deposit, but this would probably be more hassle than just accepting the check?

Random update on this. I rang BT this morning to say that if they really needed to do the credit check then I guess they'll have to. The advisor told me it wasn't necessary as I was already a BT customer (which the other advisor knew!) and all she needed was my name and the address of the flat!

I'm glad I didn't let them do the check first time or i'd have a completely unnecessary credit check on my file!

Just realised, now I think about it. BT never credit checked me at home (at least, it never appeared on my files). I wonder if I now have a credit file at 35 "Debt Street"...
    Hopefully won't be a problem.

Glad to hear you got it without a check :D
