Thanks all. I've gone a bit dithery about where to go but all the suggestions are appreciated, I had hoped to take all our (adult) sons with us but that fell through, and I think they'd enjoy it so might put it off until they can all get their acts together (some hope).

If you're taking a whole family, definitely look at alternatives to hotels - it will work out much cheaper. I will be staying here http://nonnahus.is/ for the second time later this year, and would highly recommend it. Around 2 hours from the airport, and 1 hour from Reykjavik, but it is especially well placed for a first visit, just off the 'golden circle' route.

We flew from Bristol to Iceland last December, booked with EasyJet holidays under £200 p.p. flights, 4 nights hotel with B&B, pre booked seats and 1 case between the 3 of us. car hire was around £20 a day with Avis, no aircon but heated seats and steering wheel, would have cost more to get transfers into Reykjavik.

They fly on Thursdays and Sundays so you could do a 3 night Th-Su or 4 night Su-Th.

We loved it there and will probably go back, if only to try and see the Northern Lights, only disappointment was missing them.

We didn't think the prices were that bad, similar to here, we filled up on breakfast and then had a burger/pizza type meal, yes I know, there were some lovely looking restaurants around and maybe we could have pushed the boat out but....
