RAM upgrade, Dell laptop

Friends have two Dell Inspiron laptops, one dead, one alive!

The dead one is a N5110 - 6122 (Service Tag = 1KCDKP1)
I have taken one 4GB RAM module out of this

The 'alive' one is a 1545-2601 (S/T = DJ334N1)
I haven't taken the back off, but google tells me there are two 2GB modules in there.

Can I take one of the 2GB modules out of the alive model and put the 'spare' 4GB from the dead one in it's place.

Are the two interchangeable??

if the chip is compatible, then yes. However check if it uses DDR ram, it will be faster if matched pairs are used if this is the case. what does it say on the chips ?

    First is DDR3, second DDR2. Won't fit.

I thought that's how I understood it, but wasn't certain - many thanks.

So, they will need 2x4GB DDR2 to upgrade - is it worth it?
    Running W7, 500GB HDD

Depends on what the laptop is used for. If just for web browsing, email etc., then no.

You will need pretty deep pockets for a 4GB DDR2 module  Google seems to suggest that 4GB is the max supported memory so 2x2GB.

They'd be better off purchasing an SSD instead of more RAM.
