Why is my vacuum cleaner cutting out all the time?

It went through a phase of doing this, as well as being really noisy. Then it righted itself for a few months, and now its cutting out again.
Anyone know what to do please? I don't really want to have to buy another one!
Thanks

Could be the motor cutting out and many have a safety feature that automatically cuts out when the motor overheats.0

Mine was cutting out and it turned out to be a break in the cable just where it goes in to the handle, wiggling the cable would simulate the fault.
So had to rewire the feed in to the handle.Cheers

As above posts overheating, break in cable could be the cause also does it have filters and have they been cleaned/washed or replaced as per manufacturers recommendation. It would help to know the make and model of the appliance.0 -
How does it cut out?
Does it stop and start from moment to moment? or does it run for a couple of minutes, stop working and then work ok 10 minutes later?
The former is likely to be a break in a cable or a faulty motor.
The latter is much more common and almost always caused by the machine being blocked by dust and dirt.0 -
thermal protection switch is a likely prob. a good internal clean usually sorts em out.
it needs fresh cool air to cool it down.Get some gorm.0 -

Thank you all for your answers.
I have washed both filters, checked for blockages and it is still doing it. It's a Hoover bagless cleaner. It always starts OK for about 20 secs, then stops for a few seconds then re-starts for a couple of secs etc. I generally switch it off then and let it rest. Then when I start again it does the same thing. It also sounds like Concorde taking off.
Last time it did the same thing - about 4-5 months ago, it righted itself after I washed the filter - not this time though. Not so sure that it can be a breakage because the pattern is always the same, so I think it's the thermal switch that is cutting out as suggested above.
Is it easy to fix the switch, and whereabouts is it please?0 -
If it is making such a noise there could be a blockage some where resulting in the motor creating a vacuum, spinning too fast then overheating. Pull off the pipe and see if there is any suction there.
I know you've already looked for a blockage but this still seems like the best option.0
