Flight 3 out of 6 flights cancelled.

Got a bit of an issue. I've booked to go away to Crete, via Budapest (wedding) in July. Getting there has been a nightmare, nobody seems to fly direct from Budapest to Crete on the day we needed! All done myself, not via any travel agent I should add!
The original plan was to fly from Budapest to Thessaloniki before transferring to Crete. We booked the flights and all was good until yesterday. I had an email from the airline stating that the flight was cancelled and they'd process a refund.
Luckily we've managed to find a flight (at extra cost), direct, the next day.
All this is good. Apart from the fact we've had to extend our stay in Budapest (at extra cost) and lose a day at the hotel in Greece. So we are about £200quid out of pocket.
Would this be something the airline should pay? Or is this going to be a travel insurance jobber?

It's outside 2 weeks so they're allowed to just cancel. As you seem to have bought separate tickets for each flight unfortunately the airline(s) isn't responsible.
You'll need to claim on the travel insurance, though a lot of the cheaper insurers may not cover losses from a cancelled flight mid-way through the holiday.0 -
Airlines aren't responsible for consequential loss. Unless they give you less than 2 weeks notice of cancellation you're not entitled to EU261 compensation. All you are entitled to is a refund. You can try your insurance, but you might not be lucky.0

I think I'll just take it on the chin then. The holiday is still dirt cheap even with having to spend extra.0

Update:
Had a moan at the airline and they gave me a full refund plus 10%, rebooked with Wizzair for the following day cheaper than what I had already booked.
So I've come out about evens0
