Waste Pipe under Kitchen Cupboards

Options
Hi Guys - recently moved to our new home and checked under the kitchen cupboards having noticed a draft coming from that area and also needed to carry out other works.

I noticed the waste pipe heading down into the ground through a square like hole which I gather is purpose built and 'standard' for a late 70's house. Attached is a photo I took, excuse the measuring tape.

Question - is this normal to have this or should I cover the hole (or have filled in)?

Is this safe the way it is?

Would really appreciate your input/thoughts.

Thank you in advance

Is there a pipe going down the hole? its not clear from the pic
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Apologies the photo is terrible. Yes the pipe runs the down the hole and assume out, away from the house.

    Thanks

Is it not the water mains pipe?

Believe this is the waste pipe which runs to main sewer in the street, is that what you meant?

I am more concerned I have an open square cavity/hole under my cupboards, or is this standard?

    Thanks

If you look at the picture i posted , that pipe is the mains water feed which leads to a stopcock and then on to the taps ,where does the pipe you refer to end (kitchen end) ?

I think it is unlikely you would have an open waste pipe in the kitchen

It's not standard so fill it in if you don't want it.

If in doubt, just fill it with sand!

Hey - from what I saw yesterday the waste pipes from the kitchen sink and dishwasher connect to this single pipe which is lead down under floor and out towards the road outside and main sewer (I assume).

I mainly wondered if the purpose built square cavity/hole is correct or whether this should be filled &/or covered.

I have attached two further pictures which should help, believe it may be a plumbing duct?
