I used Avast for some time but it became increasingly slow and intrusive. tried Avira for a while but now also use windows defender which seems to have got better with time. Also use Malwarebytes.
Don't agree that paying, by definition, gives you a better result.0 -

Both Panda free and Mbam Premium (have both) will warn/block wrapped pups etc.
Other av programmes surely offer same.0 -
Like kwikbreaks, I just use the Windows 10 Defender on my main PC.
I have also ditched Java and Flash.
And I'm careful about the sites I visit and links I click.
Edit:
Malwarebytes as mentioned by giraffe69 is a good idea although I don't presently use it myself, I probably should be doing.0
