Using a newer version of Norton to renew

Im talking personal experience over a 25 year career you tool.
Whether it is now "the best" antivirus product is doubtful, but at least it is better than McAfee!
25 years ago would have put you at 1991*, which seems a late start for a career in PCs, since the IBM PC first came out towards the end of 1981 in the US and early 1982 in the UK. What kept you?!
* roughly when Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit came out. I still use a leather A4 folder saying "Dr Solomon's" on the front ..0 -
This 'personal experience' must have finished about 5-10 years ago, when Norton largely ceased being a heavily-intrusive and bloated piece of software, and became much like other antivirus software in its resource usage.

What a strange comment - You cant have a career when your still at school !!
So what your saying is that anybody born after 1981 can never have a career in computers ??
Try thinking before you comment
For what its worth I was programming my own games when I was 8, on my ZX81 with black and white output, no sound and 1k of RAM.0 -
I have Norton Internet Security 2013 and the renewal price online is a joke. In previous years I have occasionally bought a new copy in Tesco and just used the product key.0

Norton and AVG are useless.
Microsoft Security Essentials is best and free.0 -

I think you have to be very careful when people say this software or that software is rubbish.
Or they say this one is better than that one etc....
In my experience people typically only recommend what 'they' are using, and don't want to say that some other software is better than the one 'they' are using. Often they don't even know as they haven't tried the latest versions of all the alternatives....so any recommendation is nothing more than perhaps a 'gut-feel'.
Vendors of anti-virus and firewall software are constantly changing and updating their applications - often every year they will bring out a new version. Applies to Norton, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky etc. etc..
Hence, one year, one vendor might be better than another, and the next year it might be vice versa.
And of course each vendor will provide a slightly cut-down version for free - and this version is sometimes enough for some people.
Some people have said that Norton is notorious for being 'bloated' and I too have experienced this in the past. But that was for one particular version in one particular year (some time ago now, and I can't remember which one). Likewise I personally have had issues with McAfee, Kaspersky and AVG in particular years. However, I have not tried all of these recently, so I couldn't say whether it was 'still' bloated in the latest versions. Hence I don't think it's fair to label one vendor as rubbish just because one version of their software in one particular year wasn't as good as another vendor's app in perhaps a different timeline.
In my view, the best approach when considering a particular type of app (such as an anti-virus/firewall) is to read comparison reviews in respected magazines or websites. These magazines will typically review all anti-virus/firewall applications once a year, and will test them in much more depth than any of us Joe Publics are likely to do. With these comparisons in mind, we can then usually pick the best product and /or best value-for-money product suitable for us.
The last review I read suggested that Kaspersky Internet Security was the best available software (at that time!) and hence that is the one that I am currently using. If a future review suggests that Kaspersky has fallen behind the curve, then I would consider using a different one in the future.
Also.....having a Barclays bank account, they are currently providing Kaspersky FREE for up to 3 computers. Bonus ! (This is the commercial version that they are giving to customers for free, not a free version of the software).
Cheers,
