I don't have an electric shower.

We have a power shower and it uses the hot water from the hot water cylinder.

Kettle yes I agree you could boil some water to get a few litres of hot water.

I just find it much easier to just turn the immersion element on when required and get lots of hot water.

Till you have a power cut or the element or thermostat goes, then where is your back up?:p

What people are inferring is that your sweeping statement about having no back up with a combi is in fact not true there is back up maybe not as convenient but it is there, plus as above we have an electric shower and also a gas hob which could still be used to obtain hot water in the event of a power failure. :)

A boiler requires electricity to run.

With no power I can still have a hot bath with candles providing the light.

If the thermostat goes all it requires is a quick trip down to the hardware store to buy a new one. £10...Very easy fix.

I got news for you an immersion also needs electricity to heat the water, I am intrigued as to how you have a hot bath once the water has gone cold when you have no power, is your immersion coal fired, maybe you could use the candles to heat the water.:rotfl:

Make sure your tank is well lagged they you only heat what is used. Gas is way cheaper than anything else, with multi fuel fires with a back boiler the next

Yes there is, electric shower to get washed with and kettle to wash dishes with.

Thanks that's exactly what i've been using past 6yrs.

If I need a bath I'll put the water on night before, though not often at all.

Various shifts, shower and kettle are much more affordable and convenient.

It takes quite a long time for the water to go cold. If the electricity supply is out it won't be out for much more than one day. The water will still be hot. It usually takes 3 days for it to get too cold to be usable.

I remember September/October 1998 being in Melbourne, Australia after a gas explosion took out the entire gas supply network for 20 days and my house was the only was with hot water as all I did was turn the immersion on. Every one of my friends came to my house for a shower. I know that probably won't happen here in the UK but I never want to be in that situation again so I will always have some sort of back up supply in case the gas boiler cannot be used.

Not if you are running baths.:p

Anyway this has nothing to do with your assertion that there is no back up with a combi boiler, which many people have stated is untrue, there are plenty of other ways of getting hot water besides an immersion.
