Memory foam dog beds

Options
Hi there

I'm looking at buying my 12.5yr old Staffy a memory foam dog bed to hopefully help her arthritis, as she seems in quite some discomfort (hopefully not pain) often. Does anyone have a good one to recommend? Anything in particular to look for? I know some have waterproof covers but right now she has no bladder or bowel issues. Thanks for any advice!

Hi. I bought a memory foam mattress-type bed for my Greyhound, for the same reasons as you've given. Mine came from Pets At Home 3 years ago and I've been very pleased with it.

I bought one of the water-resistant liners and 2 outer coverings at the same time. The benefit to me of having the liner is that, once I managed to get it on, it provides a silky surface over which the outer coverings slide on/off without too much bother. Without it, the memory foam would catch on the inside of the cover and crumbs of the foam would be forever coming away as a result.

That said, my mattress is the XXL size (3' x 4' x 3"/4" deep, I think) which is far too large to manhandle without having the liner in place. A smaller mattress could be much easier to deal with if it didn't have the liner.

My Greyhound was much more comfortable for having his joints supported by the memory foam.

I didn't look anywhere else for a memory foam bed so I'm not sure what else there might be available from different sources, sorry.

    Hope this helps a bit?

I bought a memory foam offcut 3 years ago, for les than £40, it was 1000 x 700 x 75 mm on ebay. My only regret was that I had not bought it earlier (but like you, it was artritus that instigated me buying it), it really is comfortable, (I also thought about getting myself a couple for going camping). It was the same size as my dogs old mattress, so it fitted inside his old mattress old cover. It works better with a 25 mm conventional foam as a base layer (under the memory foam).

I bought my schnauzer one in B&M of all places! It's very supportive (she's struggles on beds that are too soft) and the cover is removable and washable. It was only £20.00.

A friend has just suggested to me that (human) memory foam pillows are great to use as a dog mattress for smaller-sized dogs, too.

We have the solid memory foam slab from pets at home too, I'm really pleased with it, we have lots of dog beds, but it's the one our elderly dog chooses to sleep on.

I've got varying pieces of memory foam (mattresses or toppers) from Freecycle, eBay etc. - ranging from free to max £5. One I cut down (electric carving knife works very well!) to fit the cover of an old, lumpy bed, the other I had an old fleecy blanket which I just wrap around the foam. If the dogs are wet, I lay a couple of towels on top to dry them off rather than get the foam wet - but you can easily buy just the waterproof covers if needed.

I have an Aldi one (I think it was about £10), which has a suede effect easily washed cover (came in brown or beige)but is only about 3cm thick. However it is quite large, so folded over in half,is ample for two cavaliers.

Thanks! That does look comfy! I swear if she uses MY bed once she has a nice new one she will have more than arthritis to worry about j/k
Looking into bio flow collars too but not sure how long they need to be worn per day and would like to keep her own collar, but if it helps!
