Car Insurance - NCD questions (2 policies)

Just looking for some advice, to better understand the lay of the land.
I own a Ford, which I have just reinsured with company A. My wife owns a Skoda which is nearing the end of its policy with company B. My wife has no no claims built up as we only had one car for many years.
When we signed her up with company B, I also joined them with the Mondeo, as company B offered to match her NCD to mine. The plan was for her to walk away at the end of the year with her own NCD.
As it transpired, we sorned the Ford for a while, cancelling its insurance with company B. We have since put it back on the road with a new policy from company A.
With me so far?
The issue is that company A (new policy for the Ford) want proof of NCD. We obtained this from company B, but the letter states that the policy is still active (which I didn't notice until now). Company A therefore wrote back to me today, saying the NCD could only be used on one policy at a time.
We are confused and would like some insight into how all this works! We checked the document they sent us and definitely relates to the Ford, even though the Ford is no longer insured with them. Is this right? Is it because that NCD is still in some sense applied to the live policy on the Skoda?
All input appreciated.

The no claims earned on one policy only applies to one policy. The other company offered to mirror it if you insure 2 cars. effectively using the no claims from one policy.
The company are now using your no claims for that car. Either stick to the same compant who will mirror the no claims or start a fresh policy with zero no claims.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
