Has anyone been to Salou for a family holiday?
Any hotel/resort recommendations?

I went years ago (probably about 2006?) and I wouldn't go back. It just wasn't my cup of tea - like a hot blackpool to be honest. It may have changed since then, but I would rather stay in Barca and pay the extra.0

I presume you mean Barcelona? Barca is Barcelona FC:)
As for Salou, have been there and it get's busy, very busy in July/August but it's not Benidorm though there are plenty of Brits. If you have kids then there is Portaventura theme park, worth a couple of days there....... Barcelona, Tarragona, Reus are easily got to via Plana buses , they do very good day trips also you can catch the train.
Good hotels for kids, Golden Port, Avenieda, H10 Salauris Palace, Vi-la Romana, these last 2 are walking distance from Portaventura.
Cambrils is the next resort, nice place for a visit and good seafood places to eat.
There is lots to do in Salou .

Yes, I have been five times.
While its not my ideal spot, its great for dare devils, families, kids etc.
The last time we went, 2013, we stayed onsite in El Paso hotel, while it was not the cheapest option, we actually spent almost nothing at all while there.
If you are going I would recommend you go no later than mid August, we went the last week of August one year, and had three days of rain.0 -
Port Aventura is nice if you want a theme park holiday somewhere hot. Salou itself I thought was a bit of a dump TBH, ok if you want English bars, greasy spoon cafes and tacky shops, not really our cup of tea at all. Maybe it's improved in recent years?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

The place just outside salou is nice, erm la penida thats it! Its about a twenty minute bus ride from salou, much quieter as well. But close to the theme park and water park.0

Been to Salou many many times I absolutely adore it! However I agree with the last post about La pineda, its much quieter but has a nice beach, has aquapolis water park and is a short bus ride from all the hustle and bustle of Salou and port aventura. Although we have only ever stayed in Estival park whilst in La pineda so I am not too sure about any other accommodations!Winging life....0

I definetly recommend staying in one of the Port Aventura World Hotels. You get unlimited access to the theme park included in the price and if you stay at the El Paso it's all inclusive and that includes food from the theme park restaurants.
I've never stayed at the El Paso and it does look a bit basic but that doesn't bother me because I hardly spend any time in the hotel or room apart from when I'm eating.
I'm going there in a couple of weeks time and for only £495 per person you can't really go wrong.0 -
My next door neighbour and his extended family went to Salou for 12 years running.
They loved it, but he was scared of flying; they all traveled to Salou by coach, a 24 hr journey iirc.
Each year they stayed in the same hotel and ate at the same restaurant and drank at the same bar, probably occupied the same patch of beach.
They loved it.
Eventually his missus convinced him to try flying to Turkey as they could stay in a friend's apartment gratis and so Salou got the elbow..It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Salou is a great center for a family holiday, we go most years,it's a nice short flight and if you fly to Reus, only a short journey to the resort, Salou it's self is a little bit Blackpool in the sun but don't be put off by that, there's lots to do and more picturesque and cultural places are only a short and cheap (Plana) bus ride away, Reus it's self is worth visiting, it's a bit more of a traditional town with normal shops as opposed to the usual rows of souvenir shops selling tat, also worth a visit in Reus is the Guadi Center, a museum dedicated to Antoni Guadi. Not to mention all the fun stuff like Aquapolis and Portaventura.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
