It is a lovely hotel, we have done the gold voucher promotion once and thoroughly enjoyed it. Funnily enough just got an email through today to say next promotion is on.
Have had their afternoon teas lots of times from groupon offers, the festive one is even better as you get homemade mince pies too. I cannot fault the service. :T0 -

Ladyshopper you had a good bad day and although we all think we
will get emotional at these times ...but I think you have to be brave
And grateful that you are the visitor and if the friend isn't weeping
How dare we ...so sad that she wants to die to be pain free...the last
words my sister said to her daughter as she was gasping for breath
Was "this is it " ....so sad because she was willing to be in pain every
day she could to be able to see her grand children one more time
Was what kept her going ...... Ladyshopper for your friends sake I
hope you don't get to visit her next week and that she is pain free.

LEJC, special hugs for you. :A
Thanks everyone for thinking of me today. :A
Its been an odd 24 hours. Good in lots of ways. The traffic gods were definitely smiling on me last night, I got to Manchester in 2 hours 15 minutes which is pretty impressive, traffic was a dream. Accommodation was basic, like some kind of 70's throwback with ancient furniture your granny would have, but it did the job and I was very grateful to have a bed for the night so I could split the driving over 2 days. Didn't sleep much, combination of uncomfortable bed and just thinking about today.
Got to my friend about 8.45. She was just like she always has been, only iller if that makes sense? Was so lovely to see her. Beforehand I was scared I was going to cry and be emotional, but actually we just talked away, I can just talk so easily with her (and I'm not much of a talker normally, pretty shy). She was struggling to breathe, the talking didn't help, and was also quite uncomfortable as for whatever reason she is retaining fluid and bloating up and her ankles were so swollen. She was quite fidgety to try and get comfy. She kind of nodded off a few times, which was absolutely fine.
We talked about all sorts of things. Shes at peace with whats happening, she has had 18 months to come to terms with it and kind of knew with the decline that things weren't going to be great. We were able to talk frankly, and I managed not to cry at all, just let her talk about whatever she wanted to. Shes ready to go, she doesn't feel great and has had enough, and I get that.
I wrote her a letter yesterday, telling her how grateful I was that she had come into my life and what an amazing friend she has been. I couldn't say that stuff to her as I would have got too upset, and I didn't want to. She read it, as her husband messaged me just as I got home to say she felt the same as me.
The hardest thing was leaving. I didn't want to say goodbye, but what on earth do you say to someone that is dying and you are very likely not to see again? I just gave her a massive hug and handed the letter over and told her to read it later.
I told her I could go up on Saturday or Tuesday, if she is still with us, but she actually says she hopes she will be gone by then, or at least so out of it she doesn't know whats going on. I can't imagine just waiting to die, knowing you've only likely got a few days but not knowing when. I told her it must be very strange, if it was me every time I woke up I'd be saying to myself "still here then", and she said it is very much like that.
I was there when the registrar came round, he was absolutely lovely, great bedside manner (easy on the eye too!), must be really hard as a Dr to know how to pitch it with patients that are dying, but he was spot on. She also had some reflexology whilst I was there that they come round and do which relaxed her a bit.
It sounds weird to say, but it was a really good visit. If I get to go up again, great, if not then I know that today was brilliant for both of us.
Her parents came this afternoon, I left before they got there as I didn't want to intrude. Unfortunately they haven't had nearly 18 months to come to terms with it like I have, and to be honest she wasn't really looking forward to the visit. Hopefully they didn't stay too long, I think I probably tired her out but we both agreed it was worth it.
Aww LS such a fabulous idea writing the letter. Bet it meant the world to your dear friend. Hugs xxxCherish those you have in your life because you never know when they won't be there anymore.
