Allianz BMW Insurance renewal declined

Hi all
Has anyone heard of this one???
My Motor insurance policy is up for renewal. I am insured through BMW with an Allianz policy. Last week I received a letter from them informing me that the underwriters will not renew the policy as it falls outside their criteria.
So I rang them to ask what on earth was going on. I have made no claims and paid the policy last year up front.
They called me back today, their excuse is that there has been a "computer bug" that has meant a number of policy holders have all had their insurances terminated. They apologise for this error, they admit it is entirely their systems that have caused this, however the computer will not allow any renewals for this year, but if I would like to get in touch with them next year, they will willingly take me back :rotfl:
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has heard of this. The conspiracy theory has kicked off with me, I am turning 60 later this year, is this a poor attempt at age discrimination?
I have told them that I am very unhappy with this - will this impact my ability to apply for insurance with another provider? Will I pay more? I have told them that I am taking this up as an official complaint as this may leave me worse off.
Any views from the forum?
Thanks in anticipation
John

Your insurance has not been cancelled, they have just declined to renew, so you don't have to tell anyone about this. Just look for a new insurance policy in the usual way.0 -

Firstly because age discrimination is quite legal in financial services - if they don't want to insure over 60s they can just not insure over 60s. They don't have to come up with a spurious justification for it. (Similarly it's quite legal for them not to offer life insurance to a 90 year old, or to insure a 17 year old to drive a Ferrari, for very obvious reasons).
And secondly because 60 year olds are quite desirable customers anyway. Car insurance prices generally come down as you get older. They start to creep up again when you get very old, but you're not at that point yet, and even then you're still a more desirable customer as an 80 year old than an 18 year old. So there's no obvious reason why they'd want to purge over 60s from their customer base. Average prices by age group.
!!!! ups are generally much more common than conspiracies.
(The swear filter has made that last comment look a lot ruder than it actually was. It seems you can't say "male chicken" round here)0 -
So, they are happy to lose all these premiums for this year.
Can they not put it through as a new policy?0
