Dogs on Holiday, Black Forest

We have a possibility of my husband being given time off at the start of June. We have 2 dogs, 1 of which we rehomed only 6 weeks ago. I really don't want to put them in kennels, especially as Bella has been moved a lot lately, and is finally settling! I looked in to a pet sitter at our home, but I think we've left it too late, they are booked up!

So we do have time to get them their pet passports, if we do it this week.

I was thinking maybe take the Euro Shuttle to Calais, as we would stay in the car with them for the 35 mins. On ferries they have to be left alone in the car, and if we were on a 3-4 hour crossing I'd be very anxious the whole time.

We've fleetingly looked into maybe driving to Germany to the Black Forest, for beautiful scenery, and plenty of walking (strolling, not hiking!) and visiting castles/lakes etc.

We've not taken the dogs before, and I can find loads of "pet friendly" accommodation, but I'm wondering if anyone has a personal recommendation, either on a good area to base ourselves for a week, or a property which really would be suitable for dogs, ideally with an enclosed garden.

There will be 2 adults (me and husband) and 2 whippets. we will also need to see a vet ideally 2 days before our return to have the required worm treatment and passport stamp, neither of of took german at school!

I think a week at the accommodation, plus a stop over each way to get there and back would be ideal timescale. We are hoping to be able to leave close to the 1st June.

Any ideas/suggestions?

you need 21 days( not counting the day of vaccination) after the rabies vaccination before the dog can travel so you do not have long to arrange this. Speak to your vet as they may not have rabies vaccine in stock.

I tis recommended to get the worming treatment done in the last country of exit and there are vets available in Calais that can do this ( know the rules) and speak English. You do need to arrange an appointment. I have seen it recommended to take your own supply of treatment with you for the vet to use.

Tick treatment is no longer necessary but if you are going to an area where they are found it might be advisable.

A Scalibor collar used to protect against sandflies also kills ticks

you also need to be aware of German dog laws
