Current smart meters from BG at least, can not switch between credit and pre-pay.

You may want to have them fitted sooner rather than later, by the time the meters can do both, im sure smart meters will be mandatory.

No, don't think they'll ever be mandatory.

I dont think in the early stages they will be mandatory,,you will just get one by default but eventually they will make them mandatory. It will be Government policy.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Suppliers have to go through loads of stages before they can fit a ppm and the same will apply to converting a smart meter from credit to ppm. The only element it will remove is suppliers turning up with locksmiths and police to fit a ppm.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

every smart meter being deployed in the UK includes a relay which can disconnect the household from the electricity supply

therm can do that if she not PAY HER BILL so whos told you this therm can turn off her supply anytime ther want?!
Also complete rubbish. Here in the UK the suppliers will simply come and fit a prepayment meter if occupiers decline to pay their bills. Any debts are added as a weekly repayment set onto the new prepay meter.
Cutting off a supply is a last resort following years of non payment or meter tampering.

Why would a supplier shut off supply when they can just fit a prepay meter and collect debts every week. Thanks for the useless link , seeing as how no one in the UK has had their meters "hacked ".

The point is not so much whether smart meters can be used for remote disconnection - I believe they can - but how the energy providers will exploit such a situation. Whatever regulation is in place now, ultimately the blaggers will use the threat of remote disconnection as a blackmailing tool. They've done it with credit reporting, and they sure as hell will do it with smart meters, given half a chance.

I believe power rationing will be imposed on households in due course in the name of 'reducing climate change'. They are already asking industry to reduce their loads. I think a time will come when they ration households to a certain number of units per day, and when you have reached that limit they will shut you off until tomorrow.

If there is no intention to use the shut off relay to force non payers to pay up, why else would the relay be there?
