Can't remember who my PPI was with!

Options
I am looking to claim back my PPI. I took out car finance in 1998 and know I had PPI as being young and naive I was told that my finance application would be more likely to get accepted if I took the PPI. The problem is that I can't remember who the finance was with and I haven't kept any paperwork from then. I bought the car through a Daewoo dealership and the whole company went bust not long afterwards. Is there a way I can find out who the finance provider was? I have googled it many times but had no look.

if you bought the finance through the car dealer then your complaint is with the car dealer. Not the finance provider. Most car dealers were not regulated until Jan 2005. So, they can refuse to consider any pre-regulation sales. Where you bought pre-2005 and the dealer no longer exists, then there is no-one to complain to and the FSCS will not consider your complaint as it is pre-regulation.

The caveat to the above is that some branded dealers using the manufacturer finance company (i.e. all same brand) will see the finance company take liability for the actions of the dealer.

The main problem here will be to actually ascertain whether there was PPI at al without any documentation. 18 years on, it's unlikely that any records of this finance will still exist, especially as the dealer is no longer trading and was not regulated in 1998,

This will certainly be an uphill battle.

This sentence sounds like it was copy & pasted from a template letter....

Thank you for your help. Sounds like it's probably not going to be worth the hassle trying to trace it back. It's definitely not taken from a template letter, that's what the salesman told me when I was 19 and concerned that I didn't have a credit history...I couldn't even get a buy now pay 6 months later on a new sofa at the time :rotfl:
