Direct line

For the last 4 years to insure my car I have been using Direct line. It was the cheapest I could get and every year DL has been reducing my car insurance premium more and more so I just remained with them. This time I contacted them and asked for renewal quote and was advised that my annual car insurance will be £45 more expensive than was last year. Their argument was that car insurance has simply gone up. I was very annoyed as I have been with them for 4 years and should be rewarded for this but they said its up to me if I want to accept it or not. My question is if car insurance premium has simply gone up everywhere or DL is using their tricks as a way of making more money?

The (most) ridiculous money making excuse of a tax (IPT) insurance premium tax has gone up this year. Whether that accounts for your additional £49 or not depends upon your premium.

You have been lucky. Car insurance is re-priced every year so you're fortunate it has gone down. It can't keep going down to reward you.

All taxes are money-making. That's the point. What is particularly ridiculous about IPT?

    Did the same to me.
Moved to privilege (same company, different brand).
Price was cheaper and the cover is identical.

    There's your mistake right there!

    Always shop around at renewal.

Other than when I first started driving and building up my no claims I don't think I've ever had a renewal premium that hasn't increased from the previous year.

You maybe weren't around when government used to allow expenses against insurance premiums, particularly life insurance used for mortgages. Then they decided to tax insurance premiums which we are forced by law to have (motor insurance only and of course we could go by bus or be illegal) using money that has already been taxed (Income Tax). I have nothing against paying my way but taxing insurance premiums, what next? Maybe there will be a tax on .............. no, don't give out ideas!!

When the requirement is to not increase income tax or NI then other taxes will have to go up instead.

Well if you always shop around then you should know the answer to your question already...

I think sometimes people forget that insurance companies are a business with the primary goal of making money!. All you need to do is use comparison sites every year and switch to the cheapest. Plus even if my renewal is cheapest (which has never happened) I will still ring them and ask them to if they can reduce it!.
