Refused car insurance due to FRAUD/electoral roll?

Options
Hi,

I have been driving for last 16 yrs- usually each year I would use a price comparison site &
go for cheapest one

Note
-no driving points/ convictions
-never been declined insurance
-made non-fault claim 2014
-unemployed due to disability BUT DVLA no restrictions

So anyway I accepted the cheapest quote from GoCompare, rang the company to finalise payment

They took all my details & said my "name/ address does not match any records on electoral register" & it's flagged me up

I said that's impossible because I voted last summer & I've got my voting docs for upcoming London Mayor (same address) not to mention I've lived here for 4 yrs

They said there's not much they can do about it and will have to refund me (well they haven't even taken payment yet) seeing I rang to pay and this happened

So I asked them to elaborate on the refusal because it doesn't make sense. He mentioned that they use a new system to check for fraud and mine came back (which all
Insurers use/ share now).

But oddly changed his tone saying it "might not even be electoral issue/ but MAYBE my address has been involved in fraud in past due to previous occupants (not myself personally) " he said. He added it could be anything and he's at a lost himself

Bizarre

So anyway, I guess I will have to look elsewhere BUT has anyone had this happen to them.... And does this mean I will now have to tick YES to "have u ever been refused/ declined insurance?"

So a mistake that is NOT my fault could potentially cost me money. I asked him again how would I resolve this and he was absolutely clueless.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

    he was absolutely clueless.

Think you nailed it. Go back to them and tell them they have a duty to treat customers fairly and you need a specific answer about what has happened.
  • Thanks. Also, does that mean I have to declare "was refused insurance in past " when getting new quotes in future?

I would ask them to make sure whatever the answer is it is correct.

My husband failed a credit check for a loan. He checked his credit scores and Experian gave him a low score. He contacted them and was advised he was not on the electoral role.

Now he has lived here for 10 years and has voted in every election. He knew he was on the electoral register.

He contacted the registrar who confirmed he was on the register and offered to send him written confirmation of this.

He forwarded that to Experian and they amended his score.

So, it might be worth checking your credit scores.

If a policy was actually set-up and they then cancelled/voided it then yes. If it was just a quotation and no policy had been set-up then no.

  • Thanks all for the wonderful replies!

So is there ANYWAY to actually confirm whether the policy was SET UP/ OR NOT. I mean, I could ring and ask BUT that's like phoning the council asking about outstanding fines

So to clarify, I want to know for sure IF this would be logged on their shared systems. Hence I would have to declare when taking out new insurance.

Just to recap- It was an online quote/ I tried paying online but couldn't since it was my dad's debit card.

    They sent me this message

    "Please contact our team
to process the pre-authorised payment you made on our site, once this has been completed cover will commence on stated date 6/5/16"

    That's when they informed
me of the failed checks and refunded the money

Thank you for suggesting Experian. My friend who works in finance mentioned same thing.

I'm not on the electoral role but had no trouble getting car insurance a couple of weeks ago, so that can't be the problem here.

It depends on what they check.

I opened a bank account with TSB with no problems but failed the credit check with Tescobank.

Tesco told me the problem was my address wasn't verified but they knew it was correct as I had had another account and a credit card with them for years.

It was referred to their security section who approved the application.
  • Yes that's exactly my problem Sheramber!

    They told me

    1. No electoral roll at my address
    2. Failed "enrichment check" which is used to verify again my name/ address.

Having done some reading- I think if I pay Experian I could see exactly what has been logged against me.

Something like electoral roll/ I can contact experian and show proof of my electoral ID no. Another person who done that claims experian then amended it on their records

The insurers did mention that a common reason for being unable to verify my address is because of bills in other households from past

my medical letters are still posted to my previous address (mum still lives there) and since moving out 3 yrs ago I have not changed my DVLA drivers license address to current

I've just done that today! However that's NOT stopped me taking out insurance in the last 3 yrs therefore I don't see why it's an issue.... Obviously the system they are using isn't up to scratch ie you haven't voted according to our checks when in reality I have/ and we suffer from their incompetence

    Thanks all

Ok, so you can't be bothered to keep your records up to date and accurate but it's them that are incompetent?

If at any point you were asked for your license number then that's your issue as your addresses don't match.
