CPU upgrade not detected.

I've just tried to replace an E8500 3.16 dual core cpu with a Q9400 2.66 quad core. Windows 10 didn't detect the change and still thinks the dual core processor is in there. I tried detecting new hardware and updating the drivers but to no avail. I've tried running a few different programs and everything works ok with the wrong processor. Does anyone have any ideas how to install the new CPU properly?
I did check with Dell to see if my motherboard would run a quad and they said 'it should'. It does occur to me that in fact my motherboard won't run a quad and can't detect the additional 2 cores.
Current status is that I've put the 2 core back without any issues.

I've had this experience with Win 10 several times now. Go into Device Manager and uninstall the current listing for the CPU. Restart the PC, let Windows find the new CPU and then restart again.

I'm not entirely sure of the cause but it seems Win10 isn't able to refresh the listing in Device Manager automatically.

Every other version of Windows can do it, so I see no reason why Windows 10 can't see a new processor without any extra effort, though it can only report what it gets told.

It's more than likely the motherboard can't use the processor properly, though normally in that situation it shouldn't come on at all. A BIOS update, if available, should fix this.

what does the bios screen say the CPU is?

    what does CPU-z state?

how many cores does open hardware monitor show?

is the fault with the motherboard or indeed with windows , knowing this can put the OP on the right tracks to sorting this , until then we are all guessing

OK. I've re installed the quad.
The bios states its a quad.
Device manager states its a duo.
CPU Z correctly identifies the processor type and calls it a quad but it only finds 2 cores. Benchmark test shows threaded is double unthreaded (meaning two cores I think).

To me it looks suspiciously like the motherboard can only use 2 cores.

I'm going to try to uninstall the cpu in device manager and reinstall as suggested above. I'll be back in ten minutes.

OK I uninstalled the cpu driver and restarted. On restart I just end up with the windows 10 symbol (4 blue squares).

Currently running the diagnostics (via the boot menu). Its says its testing the memory with 4 cores. No problems so far.
