Apple Time machine - MacBook Pro

A quick question to any Apple MacBook people.
Ive got a faulty Apple Macbook Pro - 6 months old so going back to the shop as the display is black and can;t see anything on it. I have a recent time machine backup on an external HD but have never needed to use it or test it.
I guess my question really is if Time Machine is good for a disaster situation where you have to restore everything. I know it can easily restore recently deleted files etc. on a working machine.
If it is good for Disaster Recovery then is a normal Time Machine backup fine - I don;t remember seeing any additional options to select when I set it up.
Thanks

It doesn't half need a lot of backup space though. I'm looking for another backup solution. Might have to shell out for CarbonCopy Cloner which was recommended on another thread around here. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Yes it is. What you need if your computer explodes is:
Another Mac, doesn't have to be exactly the same
An OS install disc - preferably the latest one, preferably on USB (look into how to make one so you're prepared)
A Time Machine backup.
If it's another whole computer, just plug it in, go into the settings and restore, you can choose, most likely, the most recent backup.
I've personally had a hard drive completely fail on my wife's MacBook Pro. She had updated recently fortunately. A trip to PC World or similar, install the new drive, boot from USB install disc - you have the option to restore, take it. She was back up and running, exactly as it was left, within 24 hours.0 -
I've recently transferred my son's MacAir time machine BU to a new MacBookPro. Took 2 hours and his new machine is like the old one without any tweaks needed.0
