Smart meter ?

I am currently coming to the end of my fixed price deal with First Utility. A while ago they installed a smart meter. I am not aware of any useful functionality on it other than allowing them to do remote readings.

I have just tried to switch to another supplier online and got a message asking me to say if I have a smart meter. When I clicked Yes, it asked me to confirm that I understand the implications of changing and the possible loss of functionality.

Any idea what this means?

It means that your new supplier would not be able to read your meter. You will have to supply the readings as their system is not compatible with your smart [ not so smart ] meter

So smart meters are a way of undermining the competition process.

The ability for the supplier to have your readings on tap at any time they wish is a very desirable asset for them. Its a very useful function in its own right is nt it ? For a large proportion of the public not submitting readings in and getting accurately billed has cost them dearly where some have even ended up with court warrants and forced fittings of prepayment meters and bills at least 33% higher by taking no notice of their energy use. OK if and when you move from FU you lose the smart functions .Smart switching is "supposed " to be happening this year , although I have switched from Sainsburys Energy to British Gas ok and kept the smart meter functions. FU have some of the cheapest tariffs around, why switch ? sometimes its better to stay with the devil you know.
