kiss of life for vacuum cleaner?

If ever there was an appliance that I cant live without, it's my vacuum cleaner/s. Yes, I've two. As a multi-(furry)pet household they get a battering and are essential.

The Samsung I've had for three years died a couple of weeks ago, though maybe there's hope for it. Although not marketed towards a pet household specifically its fantastic and does the job better than my Hoover, which is supposedly for pets (both purchased before the energy cap on vacuums :p ), so I'd like to get it working again if I can. It kicks in for literally a fraction of a second, sputters and then stops. There's a rather worrying burning-type aroma when I try it too. Anyone know whether it's likely to be something that can be fixed, or whether I should just say adios and find a recycling centre?icon5.gif

Thanks in advance folks

I wonder if it could be the carbon brushes in the motor worn out. Does sound like it, in which case it could be a relatively easy and cheap fix.

Dirt may have gor into the motor and hence the smell. Dirt can also shortcut brushes. Good clean inside may be the answer

Thanks to both of you, I had hoped that there was something simple I could try. Fingers crossed. I'll update once I take a gander.

Have just taken it apart, cleaned all parts that had a coating/dusting a(with a cloth) and put back together. Doesn't sound any different :(

You probably need to go further inside than you have or are qualified to do - it's the motor internals which sound like they need love.

Vacuum cleaner #2 now sounds like it's on it's last legs. Making a sound like popcorn popping when it's turned on. Hesitant to use it as I'm more than half expecting it to burst into flames at any moment...... and kitty moulting season now too.

Anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner good at picking up pet hair? Those in the Which? magazine are expensive for those with the highest rating for pet hair :(

carbon brushes should be a cheap fix but if you don't know what they are you are probably going to have to pay someone to sort it. Anyone who repairs vac's or maybe appliances / power tools in general should be able to do it.

I agree.., I wasn't keen on buying a Dyson as I felt a lot of what was said about them had to be hype. Purchased loads of cheaper vacuums and they never lasted long (I have pets too).

Saw a Dyson on Ebay's Argos outlet shop, £169 which was much less than half price. Still using it now and still delighted by its cleaning ability.

I can't find any Panasonic vacuums for sale now, and I suspect EU legislation on motor size did what I could never do: killed them.

I have two dating back to the 1980s. One is now used exclusively for clearing up builders' dust/mud, and the other 'modern' one from the 1990s cost about £15 from a recycling shop.

They're reasonably good performers, compared with Miele and Dyson, and loud enough to make the cats go out for a bit of exercise.

The Miele and Dyson are both long dead. I still check out the recycle shop, but not for them.......
