The paint may be taking longer to dry properly on the dabs. The dabs will hold moisture which will slow down the drying. Do they fade gradually or stay that colour?

Put a dehumidifier on in the room to see if it sorts the issue.

The paint dried to the touch pretty quickly to be honest.

I had a look this morning & they were still yellow.

I'm waiting on a response from sovereign to find out WHY they say a vapour barrier is no good on the tanking system & what they would expect to happen if one was applied. I suspect all stain sealers are vapour barriers due to what they've got to do.

If it means condensation is going to form really badly on the surface & start teeming down then it's no good but I'll wait & see what they say.

I've been thinking of spot sealing it & wallpapering.

Anyway I'll get it painted up & see what happens.

Sorry - why did you board damp walls rather than fix the damp?

Dot and dab plasterboarding is good for nothing, unless you have control and knowledge over what is outside of the dabs and the dabs are not going to introduce a bridge for both heat and water.

The walls were tanked using that K11 system so no damp should be getting through.
Those who did the work have used this elsewhere with no problems.

Contacting sovereign themselves & they said dot & dab on a damp wall is no good but dot & dab on a tanked wall with the anti sulphate wash & the Renderlite used so on & so forth is fine.

My point is asking why is damp getting in in the first place, you haven't said this yet (that I've seen). Can't this be mitigated?
  • I suspect the reason they've told you not to put anything on that could act as a vapour barrier internally is so the walls can breathe on the inside and any residual moisture can evaporate out of the walls - as they are tanked the vapour obviously isn't going to go outwards.

I would try another mist coat with less water and then maybe a pure coat of supermatt and see what happens.

The cause of the damp we always believed to be the water running under the floorboards (a pump has been installed to deal with this) but if there's damp at the top of a wall ... 2.4mtrs high then I don't know what's causing that.

    Bit of a development though.

Wasn't waiting on sovereign replying to the email so called them.

They don't recommend stain blocks because of condensation & the need to breathe etc.

But more than that ... You were right, they don't recommend dotting & dabbing on a damp wall, even if tanking has been used. I could've sworn I was told this is ok but obviously not.

So where we go from here I really don't know. The guys who did the work have my money now so they really have no reason to come back. They're sovereign approved workers so I would've thought they'd work to sovereign recommendations.

I can't help but think these guys should be putting it right, such as ripping off & building the plaster up.

But with no money to withhold there's no longer an incentive for it to get put right.

    Depressing.
  • If this contractor was an "approved" contractor then perhaps the Sovereign Guarantee might come into play here:

You'd still have to speak to the original contractors first though.

Yeah I'll be writing off to sovereign when I get home to see what direction to go in from here.
For now I'm at work though which is why I'm just waffling away to you guys today.

I've done some googling & there's enough other people who D&D on tanked walls so it must be do-able to be fair to these guys. Just for some reason it's not worked out.

I'll thicken the paint mix up tonight & see if it improved things as it was quite watery.

Going back to the original post, all this tanking work & plastering was done in Dec 2015, so how come you're mist coating now?
