V11 reference number

Options
Hi
I'm trying to renew my car tax on line but I haven't got my V11 or V5C with me. However, I do have my old V11 for last year on me. I understand that the first 4 digits of the 16 digit number refer to the year (eg 2016). Does anyone know what the first 4 digits are for 2016 and then I might be able to work out what the remaining 12 digits are as some of them look to be the same on every V11 that I've had for this car.
I need to tax the car urgently, so any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Worriedmum

What's the urgency to tax it?

You weren't worried about it yesterday.
  • The urgency is that I've just realised that the tax has run out and I need to be able to drive the car today!

I have looked at the last 2 years and there seems to be no correlation between the year and the number. There is a block of numbers in the middle that are the same from year to year but the first 4 and the last two are different.
  • I've looked at mine for 2015 and the first 4 numbers are exactly the same as the ones my father in law has on for his for 2015, which makes me think that the first 4 numbers are the same for all cars for that particular year.

trying to tax a car online without the proper number is akin to saying you know next weeks lottery numbers desist resist and get your paperwork in order before you go any further and end up taxing someone elses car
