We're basically looking at a 3k upshot and the company approached you. Personally it's not quite enough to prompt me to want to move.

It's never a good idea to accept the first offer so there certainly should be room to negotiate.

I think it also depends on the salary level were talking about - for someone on £20k a £4K jump is very reasonable whereas for someone on £80k it's not that great.

There are also companies who make a fair offer first time round and who don't like you to negotiate - whereas for others it's certainly true that they'll offer less than they would be prepared to pay.

Just got some feedback, no negotiations on anything which is quite disappointing - from speaking to the internal recruiter they were quite abrupt so it has left a little bit of a sour taste regarding the role. I may not go for it now.

As the saying goes, don't cut your nose to spite your face.

Having said that, as long as you've weighed up the full package, as well as assessed whether the new firm fits in with your idea of culture/ways of working etc, if you reach the conclusion that you're better off where you are, there's no shame in a 'thanks, but no thanks'.

What's the deal with bonus/notice though - could you at least defer the start date to achieve the bonus with previous employer (or get new employer to pay you it to start earlier ?

That's likely to be about the limit of your 'negotiation'

Current company is quite clever, bonus is payable in mid July subject to notice not being handed in. After that I'm required to give three months notice. If new employer could sweeten the deal with this we'd probably have a deal.

Does the 2.5% increase in pension contribution soften this a bit for you? Does the new company offer a bonus scheme?

What did you ask to negotiate on? Just salary, or did you try to bring the other things that were never going to be negotiable into it?

Sour taste - that's maybe also what the recruiter also felt when you said you wanted more money on top of their good offer - maybe thought you had an over-inflated sense of worth :-$

I'm going to stay where I am, I found the recruiter very pushy today and with threat that she was moving onto other applicants on Monday prevalent the relationship on both sides has been soured too much.

I thought I was within my right to question a few things that fell short of my current contract but obviously not.

You were well within your rights - the recruiter was probably just short with you as part of their sales routine, e.g. to make you feel bad about not just accepting the offer and hope you'll change your mind in a few days / weeks / months.

Don't worry about it - if you're going to go through the stress of moving jobs then it needs to be worth it and things like holidays and flexi on a Friday afternoon are hard to put a value on.
