Thomas Cook Added Resort Fee

I recently received an email from Thomas Cook stating:

"We're always really careful when we prepare our brochures and website descriptions but sometimes there are changes to the information we give you.

Our resort team have let us know that at the New York New York hotel you will be charged a Resort Fee of $30.00 plus tax per room per night. The resort fee is payable locally and is subject to change."

There were no fees stated at the time of booking. Is there anything I can do?

For those like me who didn't know the hotel is in Las Vegas, which makes a bit more sense of the resort fee.

You need to delve into the TC T&Cs to see what their position is on such charges.

Nearly all Vegas strip hotels have resort fees (normally about $30 per day inclusive of tax).
If you had booked direct with the hotel or booked through a reputable agent you would have been able to see that the hotels charge this.

So if the resort fee is not included in the iteniary then as it is not a Thomas cook charge I don't know how you can avoid this.

Having said this my daughter went with them last year and she has no recollection of paying a resort fee (it would not have been comped as she is not a gambler)......so who knows.

The website certainly shows a daily charge of $33.60 today.

Resort fees are unfortunately charged now at most Las Vegas hotels.

The New York, New York Hotel is one of the MGM group hotels and they have been charging a resort fee for several years. The tour operator has little control over the fee although some Operators will cost the fee in, others will opt for the hotel to collect the fee from the guests.

The resort fee of $32.48 ($30+tax) per room per night is mentioned in the hotel description of the Thomas Cook brochure. Details are also given as to what the resort fee includes. I think the errata message is just a reminder of the charge.

The wording is really odd as it makes the resort fee sound like a new addition -which it definitely isn't.

That's what I thought! Unless the resort fee price has just increased?

    It's not a new addition.

While I can see how you'd both interpret it that way, to me it reads more like it's always been there but they didn't include it in the brochure.

Either someone who had booked after reading the brochure and complained, or an eagle-eyed resort rep then fed that back to Thomas Cook so they emailed everyone who had booked informing them about the fee.

Whether you can do anything about that or not I don't know. Morally I would hope Thomas Cook would cover it as it was their mistake. Legally I suspect they've covered themselves in the T&Cs by saying you're liable for any locally charged fees or taxes and that they're not responsible for printing errors.

I have the TC brochure in front of me.
It is mentioned in the brochure on the hotel description page.

Mystery as to why TC have sent the notification out but as the OP said they they were unaware of the charge having perhaps missed that in the brochure at least she was made aware in advance of her arrival.

Ah I missed that. When did you get the brochure? Maybe they corrected it?

Don't forget the $10 a day parking charge if you have a car, which although has been postponed from beginning of April, looks like it will start beginning of June

That's $43.60 on top of the room rate....crazy

Op where/how did you book as the resort fees started a good few years ago so I would have thought it was mentioned somewhere at the time of booking

Resort fees in LV are the norm.

I often wonder why they don't just add it to the room price and get on with it. Maybe it's a tax thing for the State/County or summat and has to be separately accounted for. I dunno. But it IS called a RESORT fee. So go figure.

It's just like the sales taxes in NY. You look at something and think Oh goodo, that is a great price, and when you check out at the till, OH no, that is horrendously expensive!

    Knowledge is power folks.
