5 Month old yorkie keeps shaking his head

Hello

My yorkie had ticks 2 wks ago, i took him to the vets and they gave him frontline treatment & antibiotics. he's been fine since but just recently he keeps shaking his head & scratching at his ear! the ear he scratches flops down a little  has anybody else experienced this with there dog??

Any advice appreciated, before i take him back to the vets tommorow.

It's possible he's got something in his ear.

That's how my dog behaved when she got spear grass down her ear. It wasn't visible but the vet looked with a special instument (sorry, the name escapes me at the moment:rolleyes: ) and saw it. She had to be sedated to have it removed so it might be an idea not to feed your little dog in the morning, in case he needs sedation.

I wouldn't recommend trying to poke at his ear because if he has got something in there you could well damage the inner ear.

Take him back to the vets, as some dogs can be allergic to frontline, or he might have something in his ear. When mine get ticks, i put a lot of vaseline on top of them and they suffocate and fall off.I used to use frontline etc on my dogs but now would rather use natural methods :p

Can you see any kind of orange coating in his ear? If so, it's probably canker and needs to be treated.

our dog behaved in a similar way and it took a while to take him to the vet as we thought he just had an itch - turned out to be a bad ear infection that nearly cost him his hearing in that ear... thankfully he's fine now but any prolonged ear scratching should be seen by a vet. Hope it goes well with the vet tomorrow.
  • Ear mites ? You wont be able to see them with the naked eye , drops soon clear them up.

But doesn't frontline kill every living thing on the dog ??
  • Frontline is for fleas and ticks ..not ear mites as far as i know.

:p You need special drops for ear mites, but best to get it checked at the vet anyway:p

When you look in the dogs ears do they look clean..if there's a bad infestation of earmites there's a blackish coating in them. Earmites are killed off by special drops, get them from the vets...quite quickly I would suggest as if left they can do permanent damage and you wouldn't want that would you
