House renovation..where to start?

We have just moved into a 100 years old house which is in need of complete refurbishment. We are looking also to change the layout of some rooms and knocking off some walls but there are so many ideas and we are getting confused Is it worth it getting an architect to do the drawings and calculations? Or shall I just get builders, tell them what I want and then get a structural engineer to decide on beams..etc.
We are also looking to do a loft conversion...shall I just go with the conversion company design and suggestion or pay the Architect to design the loft conversion?

As you can see, I am very confused and will appreciate advice...thanks

A *decent* architect will probably be good value, especially as you say you are confused.
As long as they listen to what you want to achieve, they should then be able to tell you the best way to get there.

Live in the house first for a year first. Then, perhaps, you'll have a better idea of what you want to achieve and feel less confused.

If you don't have a clear vision, you may get the architect's interpretation of what you think you want, or worse still, what the architect thinks you should want!

I agree with the above; listening is crucial. Meet several for a general discussion first to gauge how good they are at it or, even better get a recommendation from a friend/colleague..

Have a look on the Houzz discussion boards. They have great ideas on there, plus architects frequent there :)
