    I've been Money Tipped!
ive been in my home for 7 years this week. Everything was bought brand new (first time buyer). The only time things get changed is to match new d!cor (kettle, toaster etc to fit into scheme), the previous stuff has all been in full working order with barely a mark on it, so it has always been put on ebay or gumtree.

My mums house however was a different story - things were kept until they were long past useful, then piled up in the garage with the intention of taking it to the tip, but this trip never materialised!
They still had the same kitchen cupboards when they moved out 25 years after they moved in, and the kitchen had been installed at least 10 years prior to that. This 35 year old kitchen, dark mahogany doors that are horrendously old fashioned with doors redrilled and rehung so many times that there was hardly enough wood to screw into!

I only use mine twice a week for a hour a time, so only a 100 hours a year or so. I did read somewhere you should get between 600 and 3000 hours use out of a machine depending on the brand. Mines a Bosch.

How do you all get this length of time out of a washer? We've been together 13 years and at Christmas we bought our fourth washing machine. The last one only lasted 3 and a half years.

Is it down to how much washing you do? Or brand of washer?

Oldest working has to be the boat bobbin sewing machine, except I don't use that. I use the Singer 2001 bought in 1983 for £325 - half price because it was 6 months old ;) The previous owner had kept it as a trophy and insisted on the newest model.

My oven and the tumble drier date from 1991 but I've had to replace the washing machine & fridge. My daughter gave me her microwave because ours was looking a little grubby / decrepit and against my better judgement I threw out the grubby-in-good-working-order for a shiny newer model that lasted 6 months. Ouch.

The ceramic hob will last forever, it was 2nd hand when I got it 25 years ago - and has outlasted the company that made it...

Sometimes it can be down to the water quality/type. Mum lives in a hard water area and kettles and washing machines are regular casualties of buildups of limescale deposits.
I suppose the advertising slogan is true "washing machines live longer with Calgon"

Buying 45 Calgon tablets at Tesco cost £12.00 per box, I do 30 wash loads per month so over 1 year I would have spent
£96, so after three years I could buy a new machine for £288, or this one cheaper
