Just looking for some advice.
I bought my son a pair of vans shoes from jdsports online for his birthday.
He's had them for 3 weeks and already they have worn a hole in the toe.
I've emailed them with a picture, but they are saying it's not a manufacturing fault although they can send them for testing.
I'm not arguing it's a manufacturing fault, I'm arguing they have not lasted a satisfactory amount of time.
Should I just accept that a 3 year old wears shoes out fast or am I right to expect a pair of £29 shoes to last longer than 3 weeks?

"not a manufacturing fault" is code for "your son seems to have caused the damage with excessive use"
To be fair there are probably only two reasons for the damage:
1. The material is of poor quality and did not meet the required standards (ie a manufacturing fault)
2. Your son has misused them (and I doubt you keep tabs on him 24/7 AND are vans still skater shoes, or have they sold out and gone mainstream?)
Whilst you'd expect them to last longer than 3 weeks, point number 2 would result in nothing owed to you (but hopefully you can spin a lesson for your son out of it about the value of money etc). Point 1 would require testing of the item, which has been offered by the retailer.
So that's that in my eyes. Await someone more knowledgeable, but I think they are fulfilling their obligations to you. I just don't see what else (aside from customer negligence and manufacturing issue) could cause the damage.0 -
I would only use leather shoes for daily use for a child of that age, particularly if he's at nursery.0

As someone who has worked in a shoe shop when I was younger, Daytona has summed it up perfectly.
I would suggest you have two options here.
Option one, and what I would try first is return them to a JD Store with your despatch note, and try to return them that way. Obviously don't mention about trying to return them online first, but usually we would exchange them over for another pair, especially as you've had them for such a short time.
Hard to advise really without seeing the state of the shoes, but aslong as they obviously haven't been misused, such as kicking stuff in them etc, then most people would be happy to exchange it over for you.
If this don't work, or not something you can do, then the second option would be to send them off for testing, a lot of hassle and less chance of success though.
Definitely take them to store if you can, and go in being polite, don't go in shouting about your rights as this will probably make the manager not want to help you.
Hope this helps and good luck.0 -
Thanks for your replies.
I don't see how he could "misuse" them, he's worn them like any other shoes he's had and they've all lasted long enough for him to grow out of. And yes vans are mainstream now.
I guess I'm just annoyed as they were a birthday present and the first shoes I've let him choose himself, he's gutted. And now I'm going to have to buy another pair of shoes.:j First mini munchkin due 05/04/2013 :j0 -
There are lots of ways he could misuse them.
Dragging them on the floor, kicking things in them and scuffing them are a few possible ways. Not saying he has done any of these of course.0 -

Using shoes as a "brake" on bikes, trikes and scooters is a sure fire way to wear holes in the toes of shoes.0 -
Ok I understand now, thank you.
I think it's most probably from playing on the floor with his train track, dragging his feet underneath him.
Not had the weather to be out on bikes and scooters lol!
I guess it's lesson learned don't buy canvas shoes for kids 😊
Thank you for everyone's replies x:j First mini munchkin due 05/04/2013 :j0 -

Canvas shoes are great for kids, just buy them for a couple of quid from the supermarket or primark then it doesn't matter if they get abused/ruined.0 -
Your 3 year old picks out his own shoes?
At that age, the only thing my kid would pick was his nose or anything with Thomas the Tank engine on it. :rotfl:"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0
